Stop Negative Thoughts - Make A Habit of Positive Thinking

Whether you are trying to make improvements in your personal life, romantic relationships, or business world, learning to stop negative thinking is a powerful way to help you achieve your goals. Banishing negative thinking can help you to develop a more positive mindset, which is linked to greater happiness, higher levels of achievement, and stronger, healthier connections to others. But how do you stop negative thoughts?

How to Stop Negating Thinking

Here are some tested strategies for making positive thinking a habit in your life by changing a negative mindset.

Acknowledge and Address Your Negative Thoughts

Often, you may hear advice to “just ignore” negative thoughts when they come into your mind.

But, ignoring them will not make them disappear; they will come back.

Instead of trying to push them aside, acknowledge these thoughts, and talk to them, instead.

Ask yourself why you feel this way.

Ask yourself if that negative thought is even true.

Discuss why you believe that and what would happen if you changed your ideas.

The more you analyze and intentional focus on that negative thought, the more you will likely see how little legitimacy it has, which makes it easier to let go.

Start the Day with Positivity

When your day starts with negative thinking, the rest of your day will follow suit.

So, as soon as your eyes open in the morning, start with a positive thinking routine that helps you get your day off on the right path.

Think about what you are most looking forward to about your day.

Make a mental list of three things for which you are grateful.

Repeat some positive affirmations that will help you concentrate on your goals for the day.

Whatever you do, make those first thoughts about what is good and positive in your life, and the rest of your day will be much more positive, as well.

Create Boundaries for Negative Thoughts

Anyone who has lived with a negative mindset for a long time knows that it can be hard to let go of this outlook on life easily.

When you first start trying to change your mindset, allow yourself time during the day to entertain your negative thoughts.

But make sure that you enforce these boundaries.

If your mind knows that there is still a chance to express your negative thinking, it can be easier to let them go during the rest of your day.

It is like a smoker trying to quit. If you cannot go cold turkey, start weaning yourself down to fewer and fewer hours each day when you allow yourself to consider such negative thinking.

Stop Hanging Around Negative People

The more time you spend with people who complain or who are pessimistic in their outlook, the more likely you are to think and behave this way, too.

If you find that you have people in your life with negative attitudes, limit your exposure to them.

Avoid the break room at work if all people do is gripe and moan there.

Spend less time with the grouchy family member who never has anything good to say.

The more you are around positive people, the more optimistic you will feel.

Write it Down

If you are working through some complex negative emotions, journaling can be an effective way to express those emotions that also allows you to let them go and move on.

Many times, the act of writing things down releases them from your mind, allowing you to stop thinking about them.

If you are upset with someone else, you can try writing them a letter that expresses how you feel, and then destroying it, which is a symbol of your commitment to moving on from these negative thoughts.
